Teeth Whitening Q & A
What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a type of cosmetic dentistry designed to remove stains and discoloration from the surface of your teeth.
As you get older, the outer layer of your teeth, known as the enamel, develops cracks and fissures, revealing the inner portion of your tooth, called the dentin. The dentin in your teeth is colored yellow; as your enamel thins and wears away, it becomes more visible.
Aging isn’t the only source of yellow teeth, however. Other factors that can cause your teeth to yellow include:
- Drinking staining beverages such as coffee, soda, or wine
- Smoking cigarettes
- Using chewing tobacco
- Failing to practice good oral hygiene
Who is a good candidate for teeth whitening?
Any teenager or adult who has relatively healthy teeth and gums but is unhappy with the aesthetic appearance of their smile due to discoloration can benefit from teeth whitening.
Modern teeth whitening treatments are incredibly versatile, but some stains respond better to treatment than others. For example, yellow stains are easier to treat than gray or blue stains.
Following a comprehensive oral exam, review of your medical history, and discussion of your aesthetic goals, your dentist can tailor a teeth whitening treatment plan to your individual needs.
What types of teeth whitening treatments do you offer?
At Sunshine Dental, Inc., the team offers both Philips Zoom® in-office whitening as well as take-home whitening trays. Each of these treatments is effective but has different advantages.
Philips Zoom
Philips Zoom is the #1 patient-requested professional whitening treatment option. It’s performed in-office and can make your teeth up to 40% lighter*. What’s more, most appointments take 90 minutes or less.
During Philips Zoom whitening, your dentist applies a protective covering to your gums. They then carefully paints a hydrogen peroxide gel onto the surfaces of your teeth, which triggers a chemical reaction to break up stains on your teeth.
After letting the gel sit for half an hour, you put on a pair of safety goggles, and your dentist aims the Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed Whitening LED Accelerator at your teeth. The LED technology speeds up the whitening process revealing a bright, Hollywood-worthy smile.

Take-Home Whitening Trays
If you aren’t interested in an in-office teeth whitening treatment, you may want to consider take-home whitening trays or tray bleaching. These prescription trays are only available through your dentist and fit the unique contours of your teeth.
You take them home, fill them with a peroxide whitening gel, and slip the trays over your teeth. Although similar to over-the-counter whitening strips, whitening trays are capable of whitening all of your teeth and provide longer lasting, more noticeable results.
